Channeling Sophie's Garden

Carol's garden is in Port Hope MI, in a rural, lakeside community. She has lots of space and expertise. Laura' garden is located in Centralia WA, in a small suburban yard challenged by access to sun and space. Debbie's garden is in Deckerville MI, in a smaller rural yard, where rules are ignored.

Each of us is applying what we learned at at our mother's and grandmother's knees in space once owned by Sophie Mayer Birg Harter on Rangeline Road. Sophie immigrated to Detroit in 1908 from Heufeld, a once German (Donauschwaben) community of Hungary. Her hope lives on.

Tomato Project

5/21/11:

Ok, the tomatoes are officially out in
the garden. Two of them will be in pots and share the south flower garden, the third is in the ground and in the back east garden. I had one in the east flower garden last year and it did well but it was later than others so hoping the south flower garden will be a better location.

5/9/11

Shawn put his tomatoes outside in a protected area outside his woodshop. The one in the wheel barrel is ultra protected and growing well.

4/30/11:

Tomatoes are ready for warm weather, but they are progressing well in the potting shed's southern exposure. We have 2 tomatoes, we are so excited, and the tomatoes are from Carol's tomatoes!!

4/26/11

Last year we were planting tomato project plants in yard protected bv water wall. Not this year. The tomatoes are doing well but no heat or sunshine out side ok a little seems like none! The peppers, flowers, and basil are doing well.

4/9/11

Battle tomato has officially begun. Shawn moved his tomatoes out to the potting hsed while I am leaving mine in the sunroom. I did transpalnt the garden tomatoes and plan on leaving htem in the potting shed. It cools down at night but I will have them under a light and covered in a clear palstic sheet so they should stay nice in cozy in the south window.

4/3/11

The plants have the beginnings of buds on them this week, they are growing nicely. It is a little fuzzy but if you look close you can see the bud, really!!!

3/25/11
Tomatoes are growing strong. There may be snow outside but there is green inside. On track for some July Early Girls in Michigan!! We are going to leave these to grow in these pots. We will add dirt as they grow.

3/12/11

The tomatoes are growing well. We added another level so we could raise the light on the tomatoes but keep it lower on the flower seedlings popping up. Have to go out to the potting shed to get the light.
