Channeling Sophie's Garden
Carol's garden is in Port Hope MI, in a rural, lakeside community. She has lots of space and expertise. Laura' garden is located in Centralia WA, in a small suburban yard challenged by access to sun and space. Debbie's garden is in Deckerville MI, in a smaller rural yard, where rules are ignored.
Each of us is applying what we learned at at our mother's and grandmother's knees in space once owned by Sophie Mayer Birg Harter on Rangeline Road. Sophie immigrated to Detroit in 1908 from Heufeld, a once German (Donauschwaben) community of Hungary. Her hope lives on.

It's time to plant seeds!
Following the Old Farmer's Almanac, March 6 is the moon-favored date for seed planting for many seeds types, so I am gathering supplies and getting ready to have a seed planting party tomorrow!
My garden for herbs and vegetables is made up of 6 small raised bed and various containers- about 250 square feet. So the goal for me is to not plant too many seeds! I always do, though, and then give them away.
This year I am adding a number of flowers too.
So if you're feeling blue and want spring to come - get inspired by planting something. The seeds are the hope of fall's harvest - however big or small. You don't need much, just some pots, some seeding mix or potting soil (I am using a seeding mix this year) and a south-facing window. I just hope I have enough room!
Today we also turned the clover over (red clover cover), added dolomite and bone meal to the herb beds AND fertilized the garlic bed. "Let the sun shine . . . "

We have a large garden and orchard and grow many different fruits and vegetables. We also love to grow flowers and are working on our flower bed gardens at the house so they are more structured. Our favorites are our roses and dahlias. Join us on our garden journey this year. It has begun with the planting of our early girl tomatoes to see of we can get some ripe tomatoes before July 15. We have tried for 3 years but have not had ripe ones before August 1. We have also started peppers and some flowers. I use a seed starter under a grow light. It is snowing and blowing outside but inside I am dreaming of colorful flower beds!
